How many hiking fans do we have out there? Here’s your chance to earn another awesome merit badge. For the first six(6) months of 2020 (Jan-Jun), we’re hosting hikes that will go towards your hiking merit badge. The hiking merit badge is one of the required merit badges to earn your Eagle Rank. So let’s get hiking!
The Mission Hike and Bike Trail is located just south of the City of Mission. If you are driving West from McAllen, exit Conway in Mission, turn left under the underpass and travel approximately half a mile. The entrance will be on your right.
From the parking area, the hiking path runs West through scrubland and over two bridges to end at Bentsen State Park. As the trail is relatively unshaded, be sure to bring sun protection and plenty of water for the journey.
Parking and trail access is available on both ends of the trail: at Mission Hike and Bike Trail on S. Conway, and in Bentsen State Park (2800 S. Bentsen Palm Drive).
The hiking merit badges require your Scout a total of six hikes. Take the six following hikes, each on a different day, and each of continuous miles. These hikes MUST be taken in the following order:
- One 5-mile hike
- Three 10-mile hikes
- One 15-mile hike
- One 20-mile hike
As we continue through our monthly hikes, we will slowly extend the distance each month. We will stop for as many short rest periods as needed, as well as for snacks or a meal, depending on the length of the hike.
